as you've probably heard nintendo has renamed its next console. Thoughts?

IMO, this is a marketing disaster. Its almost as if nintendo is trying to get people to turn away from their consoles. In my honest to god opinion this is the single worst name ever given to a console.

Meh i prefered revolution but it doesnt matter, i dont by the system for the name.... plus no name will ever beat the name super nintendo and "regular" nintendo (thats what i called the NES).

Wii? Huh? How do you say it?

"Wi", as in wi fi?

'WTF!' has pretty much been the general reaction, and that indeed was my initial reaction, . . . but the new name is kinda growing on me. I certainly see Nintendio's philosophy behind the name. It's just a simple uncomplicated word. Nintendo is trying to get your grandpa, your mom, and anyone who doesn't normally play games, to play games. A name like Playstation or GameCube sounds like you would expect a videogame console to be called. 'Wii' is a much simpler name and more family-friendly precisely because it doesn't sound like something that only the teenager of the house would touch. It's not just about him playing games anymore. . . . it's about us or 'we' if you will. The name does make sense. I also read an interview with Perrin Kaplan today when she stated that unconventional names always surprise people but then people get used to them and it becomes natural. Names like 'Ipod', 'Google', 'Yahoo'. They sounded silly at first. Look how popular they are now. 'Wii' isn't as ridiculous a name as 'Xbox' is. Why is the xbox called xbox? They put an x on top of the console. What a stupid idea. They could just as well have put an A there and called it the Abox.

I'm not done yet. Since when is the name Playstation 3 so awe-inspiring? Or xbox 360? They just added numbers for crying out loud. Brilliant brain-storming sessions at the Sony and Microsoft meetings I'd say. And good or bad, people just can't stop talking about 'Wii' on message boards. It's got people talking. That's never a bad thing. Do you think controversy hurt sales of the "daVinci Code'? Huh? Do you?

Nobody said they were, but like Axm said yesterday, at least you could pronounce them correctly when you first see them. Nearly everyone here thought wi-fi at first.

WORST COMPARISON EVER

Sorry I missed coming here, the reason why... the crazy shit storm this Wii has cause in message boards everywhere. Yesterday was hilarious everyone coming together to make fun of what has to be the worst name in the history of bad names.

How do they pull this crap out of their ass, wii, WTF!!!!! And Heath, I'm still getting a rev...er Wii, but even you have to admit the name is a pile of stinkin horse shit. You say words like Playstation 3 and Xbox sound dumb... at least they are nouns. Wii (as in we) is a pronoun, there is no way that word could be used to properly sell a product. Thats like naming a product "The me" or "The us" or "The they", it does not work. To top it off the word "wee" refers to piss and or a penis, great.

Plus if Nintendo needs to create a page long paragraph just to decribe what the name means, guess what, it stinks! At the very least its been freakin hilarious talking about it.

Lets put Wii into everyday conversations:

"I'm going home to play with my wii. Want to come."
"Wan't to play Wii with me?"
"My wii is so small. "
"Do you have Madden for Wii?"
"Check out my new Wii guys."

and so on. I will just call it the Nintendo.

Call me a casual, but I would personally feel embarassed playing a "wii"
