NOTE: While I consider myself to be functionally fluent in Japanese, it is still a second language, so I might have confused, misremembered or left out certain details. I'm confident I have the core details of the plot down, but having only seen it once, I can't guarantee this to be comprehensive. Luckily, the DVD version hits with English subtitles in January, so we can go back and get the complete picture later on.

First, the cast line up:

- Chris Redfield (BSAA NA Captain)
- Rebecca Chambers (Philosophy University Guest Chemistry Lecturer/BSAA NA Adviser)
- Piers Nivans (BSAA NA Member)
- Sophy Home (BSAA Oceania Member)
- Tyler Howard (US Government Agent; former Rochester Police Officer)
- Ryan Howard (Head Curator of Fossil Museum/Researcher of Viruses)
- Barrington Meyer (Philosophy City Detective)
- Posh Braun (Philosophy University Security Guard)
- Mary Gray (PU Student)
- Olivia Price (PU Student)
- Lucas Butler (PU Student)
- Ezra Sennett (PU Headmaster)
- Matthew Russell (PU Secretary)

Basic Summary:

After surviving the Mansion Incident, Rebecca Chambers goes on to become an adviser for the BSAA and actually participates in several missions, including viral outbreaks. One such notable incident was a T-virus outbreak in Rochester, MN, in 2005 where Rebecca goes to investigate a viral outbreak. She encounters Tyler Howard, but an encounter with zombies apparently results in his death.

In August 2010, Rebecca has become a Guest Lecturer at Philosophy University in Philosophy City, Western Australia, at the invitation of Ezra Sennett, the university's Headmaster. Among her students is Mary Gray, who is an intelligent high IQ student. The university is overrun with zombies, sending all university faculty and pupils into a panic. Rebecca contacts Chris for help, who brings Piers with him, and together with Sophy, a member of BSAA Oceania dispatched to assist in the incident, they seek to uncover the truth.

Main Points:

Summarizing the entire story is pretty complicated since the story has its fair share of twists and turns, and I've only seen it once, but the main details are:

- Ezra asked Rebecca to investigate recent disappearances at Philosophy University under the guise of Guest Lecturer. Rebecca's background as a medic makes this a believable cover.

- Tyler Howard actually survived Rochester and became a US government agent (like Leon, although a connection between the two is never mentioned), although his father and Rebecca believed he had died. He goes to PU to investigate the zombie incident, particularly Ryan Howard, his father. He reveals himself to his father, who had been grieving his son's death, but Ryan Howard believes Tyler to be an imposter after his "new virus." Tyler then attempts to rescue students from the university, and doesn't get along with the BSAA at first, but in the end decides to cooperate with Chris.

- Ryan Howard is a former Umbrella researcher. After Umbrella fell in 2003, he goes off on his own to do research, and eventually ends up with funding and facilities provided by Ezra. He has been developing a "new virus" that mixes DNA extracted from fossils with the T-virus. In the end, he unleashes a Mr. X against Chris, Piers and Tyler, but they defeat it (easily, and without mutating too). Ryan then attempts to inject himself with the virus, but Tyler kills him before he can mutate uncontrollably (Steve Burnside-style, I might add).

- Sophy and Piers apparently joined the BSAA at the same time and know each other.

- Matthew Russell is actually Ezra's adopted son. Matthew's parents were killed in a war in Italy in front of his eyes when he was young. I actually can't remember what his exact motive was, but he had a hand in convincing Ezra to fund Ryan's research. Ezra calls Matthew out on the incident for destroying the school he helped build, and Matthew eventually hangs himself in shame.

- Mary Gray is actually Ryan's daughter and Tyler's sister (although apparently Tyler did not know this until the incident since Tyler believed he only had one relative still alive, his father). It turns out that her body has an immunity to the T-virus (similar to Alice), and being the test subject for her father's virus has resulted in her having combat skills (she manhandles Tyler and the BSAA) high IQ, severe bipolarism and unusual level of clairvoyance. Mary eventually reveals herself to Tyler and the BSAA as Tyler's sister. Tyler tries to reason with her, but fails. Part of her resentment toward life in general comes from being rejected by Lucas, who she had a crush on, in favor of Olivia, her best friend. These two are killed during the zombie outbreak.

- Barrington Meyer is a detective sent to investigate the incident. He pretends to be an ally of the BSAA and Tyler, only to betray them later. Apparently he was complicit with Ryan in covering up the disappearances in exchange for kickbacks. (I honestly missed most of his background, and he does die relatively early, so will need to watch again)

- Posh Braun is a middle-aged security guard at the university, but unfortunately he isn't terribly useful in combat. He has a comedic personality. He does genuinely attempt to help the BSAA with their investigation, but is bitten by a zombie, infected and then transforms into a zombie. He is killed by Sophy afterwards; however, he reanimates a few minutes later and bites Barrington, causing him to mutate as well.

- Mary Gray eventually mutates into a dinosaur fossil-like creature after being infected with her father's new virus. Rebecca brings a Rocket Launcher, which Chris uses to destroy Mary Gray in one hit. Guess it's not such a strong virus after all... certainly nowhere near as threatening as Uroboros or the C-virus.

- Tyler retrieves a briefcase from his father containing the new virus and other unknown content, but in the ensuing chaos, he loses it, and Ezra seizes it. Ezra escapes from the university unscathed.

Other Interesting Information:

- Piers doesn't have much of a role in the actual story, other than being there to back Chris up and having known Sophy before the mission.

- Rebecca and Piers meet for the first time.

- Rebecca has actually been quite active in the fight against bioterrorism, going on missions and generally holding her own, even in combat. In The Stage, however, she does prove to be quite vulnerable, but still not entirely defenseless.

- No mentions of Leon or Jill. However, Chris does tell Tyler that Claire is his only living relative (his younger sister).

- The First Aid Spray, Green Herb, and loading door sequences are featured.

- Chris pushes a bookshelf sideways to reveal a hidden passage.

- There is an RE1 flashback featuring Chris and Rebecca, giving viewers insight of their backgrounds.

Sounds very compelling. Glad there's a dvd coming. August 2010 means this will be one of Piers' very first missions so it kind of makes sense for him to have a smaller role.

So... this is canon, right? The detail is a bit much if it isn't.

Pretty sure it'll be canon. What bearing that will have on the series...probably nothing. Apart from asserting Rebecca as a BSAA associate for the new movie.

All four surviving members of STARS are now BSAA, eh? I wonder if they were all part of the Original Eleven, or if Rebecca and Barry came on afterward.

Rebecca and Barry are just advisers, unlikely Original Eleven members (Barry was invited by Chris to join after the organization was already founded so he can't be). They're on the same level as Doug Wright.

The remaining Original Eleven are people like Clive R. O'Brian, recruited from a range of areas pertaining to bioterrorism and anti-bioterrorism measures. For instance, Doug Wright was an adviser for his knowledge in microbiology. Another Original Eleven is the man who adopted Sheva Alomar and convinced her to join.

I do like how they're actually putting their "expanded universe" to decent use. The Oceania and Far East branches have been pretty well represented in supplemental material through Sophy Home and Merah Biji. The potential for stories in this series is utterly limitless, it's just a shame the writing isn't there for it. The whole angle of using the t-Virus as the base for a wide-range of new viruses is perfect and shows that even though the Progenitor Virus may have been eradicated, the viruses are still threats.
