This one has been a long time coming.

The Evil Within (called Psycho Break in Japan) is a Survival Horror, Phychological Horror, and Action Horror game series directed by RE1 and RE4 director Shinji Mikami. It has some great body horror, as expected of a RE spiritual successor, and I've been looking forward to delving into it's monster designs for this post. I will only cover the first game here, and will cover the sequel in the next post. MAJOR SPOILERS throughout. This may be my biggest post yet, with an obscene amount of time spent writing and finding the right pictures (a lot were needed to show certain monsters from different angles, as they have details in their design that can be easy to miss).

Below is the typical general story background I give. However, this one is especially long. The designs of the monsters in this game are heavily related to the story, Silent Hill style, so I felt the only way to appreciate them fully was to understand the story in depth. Looking back, some of it may not have been necessary, so feel free to skip it.

General Background:
Spoiler:
Ruben was the youngest child in the illustrous Victoriano family. He grew up with a morbid fascination with the brain, killing and cutting up small animals to perform studies. His father, a member of a nearby religious group (more of a cult, really), was alienated from his son due to this, as he threatened his reputation in the cult. A doctor by the name of Marcello Jimenez, who worked at Beacon Mental Hospital in the nearby Krimson City (an institution heavily funded by the Victorianos) took an interest in the boy, seeing his potential, and provided him with reasearch material.
The only person who Ruben could really connect with was his older sister Laura. One day, at 11 years of age, he went playing with his sister in a family barn. The villagers of the nearby community, enraged at the Victoriano family for buying up all nearby land, formed an angry mob and burned the barn down. Ruben escaped the blaze covered in horrific burns, while Laura was left in the fire.

Ruben's father, embarrassed of his malformed son, locked him away in the basement, and told his mother he was dead. After years spent in solitude and constant pain, Ruben escaped and stabbed his parents to death. He then faked their deaths in a car crash, and inhereted the family fortune and mansion. He devoted himself to his research, and began kidnapping and murdering villagers as revenge, and to forward his studies. He used special drugs to make them fully aware of the pain as he cut them up and probed their brains. Around this time he rejected further skin - restoration treatments.

Ruben began seeing his sister in dreams. It occurred to him - Laura was alive in his mind. This became the focus of his work, and he developed plans for a machine capable of creating a "dream world" from the mind of humans. This was STEM. It also allowed human minds to be linked - anyone connected to STEM would enter this world, and the environment would be equally made up of each persons mind, with everyone subconsciously adding to the landscape. He planned to be reunited with his sister, and to link up and punish those who wronged him for eternity (time is perceived differently in STEM).

Jimenez stole some research from Ruben's safe and published it in his name. He became the director of Beacon Mental Hospital following this, and attracted the attention of MOBIUS. MOBIUS is essentially the illuminati, and seeks to control everyone by any means necessary. This is why they found interest in the research Jimenez published - they wanted to manipulate the minds of others, and STEM had the potential to do just that. Jimenez agreed to work for them, but reached a dead end in the creation of the STEM machine and asked Ruben for help, who agreed, as he lacked the resources to build it alone.

Ruben built the machine at Beacon. In order to operate properly, STEM requires a "core" - a suitable mind at the center that can hold the dream world together (and control it). Without a core, STEM becomes "destabilized" (something explored in the sequel). Ruben designed STEM so that only his brain pattern would work as the core, to keep MOBIUS from using it. In response to this, they captured Ruben and, while using his drugs that kept the user aware, cut him into peices and removed his brain, killing him. This brain (designated RUVIK, a condensed way of saying Ruben Victoriano) was used as the core, and experiments began at Beacon, where patients and later abducted civilians were used as test subjects, with Jimenez left in charge.

However, most who entered STEM for a prolonged period of time never returned, leaving their bodies behind as their minds were absorbed by STEM. This was due to a "ghost" in the system destabilizing STEM and killing anyone who entered, corrupting their minds - Ruben, whose consciousness survived in the system. He had taken on the name Ruvik, and altered the minds of others to be "in tune" with his own, creating a human hive mind centered around him. Even though the STEM world was made up of the thoughts and memories of everyone who ever enters, his dominating will warped it into his image (a shifting landscape primarily mirroring locations from his memory, and inhabited by monsters created from his mind). He sought to grow in power, then escape in the body of a STEM user whose mind shared similar patterns. He then planned to use his powers in the real world to blur the lines between reality and his own mind, plunging everyone into endless torment.

Jimenez finished construction of a wireless STEM, capable of pulling anyone into STEM within it's vicinity when activated. However, a rift grew between him and MOBIUS due to setbacks caused by Ruvik. In order to prove his continued worth to them, he planned on activating the wireless STEM with Ruvik at the core and entering it himself with patient Leslie Withers, then returning. Leslie was the only person who could survive sycronization with Ruvik due to having similar brain patterns, which would allow Jimenez to escape. Unknown to him, Leslie was also the perfect host for Ruvik to escape. MOBIUS also wanted Leslie, as his brain could replace Ruvik's as a STEM core.

Upon activation of the wireless STEM, everyone at Beacon was killed by a manifestation of Ruvik, with the survivors pulled into STEM, like Jimenez and Leslie. This led to the Krimson City Police department (KPD) sending nearby detective Sebastion Castelleanos (whose story I will cover in my TEW2 post) and his partner Joseph Oda to investigate with KPD rookie Julie Kidman. Upon arrival, they are also pulled into STEM, and the events of TEW begin there.

Jimenez is eventually killed, and Kidman is revealed to be an undercover mole in the KPD working for MOBIUS. She was sent into STEM to retrieve Leslie, but became dissillusioned with the group along the way. It was revealed MOBIUS had built their own STEM, and that Leslie was not needed as the core (the new STEM already had a core, as revealed in TEW2). Her true purpose in STEM was to "cleanse" the system, using sane people to kill Ruvik, and to test a special serum they gave her capable of controlling her in STEM using fear. Sebastian and Kidman escaped STEM, as did Leslie, whom Ruvik possessed and escaped into the real world with (and promptly disappeared). Kidman stayed with MOBIUS in order to fight them from the inside.

Note a few parts of this are speculation on my part, namely MOBIUS' reasons for sending Kidman into STEM, and Ruvik manifesting to kill everyone at Beacon. These are generally accepted by a good number of the community as most likely, however.
I will continue the story with my TEW2 post.

The Haunted:
Spoiler:
The basic enemies of TEW1, they behave like a mix between zombies and the RE4 Ganados, and as such can run and use weapons. They have bizzare growths, and appear as if tortured, wrapped in barbed wire and covered in gashes that should be fatal. They have distorted voices, and emit white light from their eyes. A symptom displayed by some is intense itching, probably a reference to RE.
They were created by people having their personalities and thoughts overwritten by STEM, causing them to become mindless and insane, seeking to devour the brains of any non-Haunted in a vain attempt to reclaim their minds. They can be considered "undead", as their bodies in the real world are dead, leaving only the trapped consciousness'. Since this STEM is dominated by Ruvik's consciousness, their appearance and nature reflect his mind. They appear mutilated as a reflection of Ruvik's own pain, as well as from his sadistic preocupation with torture. They can only be killed by destroying the head (represnting vanquishing their minds), or by burning them, again due to Ruvik (who has a weakness to flame).
While they seek prey on their own, they also receive orders from Ruvik. Some wear masks to try and hide their nature in a vain attempt to be human again.
I highly recommend careful examination of each, as a lot of great body horror is present.
ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage
Invisible Haunted - Haunted with tentacles sprouting from the face, these can turn invisable. They may represent the same thing Quell does.
    ImageImage
Ruvik Doppelganger - Haunted that have an unusually high synchronization with Ruvik, they wear his coat, and have faces shrouded in darkness underneath the hood. Blood sprays from the face as it lets out a cry, summoning Laura Reborn to grab prey from underground.
    Image
MOBIUS Haunted - Encountered by Kidman, these have an appearance that reflects her memories. They are dressed as agents, and are covered in cracks with a glowing light beneath, representative of hidden nature. This light changes color based on their awarness of Kidman.
    Image
Cadaver - Some Haunted, when slain, will rarely transform into these. They crawl on all fours, belly and chest facing upwards, with large growths (which appear to be a brains) consuming the torso (from which the ribs sprout like spikes). They feed on corpses, and are completely blind. Despite this, they have excellent hearing. Upon being alerted, their growths swell and glow as they seek out any disturbances. Upon detecting prey, they explode, killing anything in their proximity instantly.

Other Enemies, part 1:
Spoiler:
Sadist - A serial killer trapped in STEM, he has been transformed by his own bloodthirsty nature and by Ruvik's inner rage. He has a burnt and scarred face (like Ruvik), and has a metal mask welded onto his face, like those used to keep patients from biting. He uses a meat cleaver, a chainsaw (most common: he's essentially a reference to the RE4 Chainsaw Man), and a rocket launcher.
ImageImageImage
AlterEgo - Patients corrupted by STEM who had multiple personalities disorder. The inner, aggressive, self destructive personality has become a creature fused to the actual person's body, with the two tangled together in constant misery. The original personality has become submissive, and looks human-ish, sometimes with a mouth gagged with some kind of tumorous growth, and has gray, corpse-like skin. The aggressive personality is dominate, and appears as a red (like muscle tissue), pulsing monster with fangs. Sometimes they will sprout a parasite from the chest (like Ganados), likely representing the alternate personality acts like a parasite.
ImageImageImageImage
Babies - Small version of AlterEgos that squirm and crawl on the ground.
    Image
Trauma - A monster born from Ruvik's veiws on his father's warped religion. It is a tall, discoloured figure with a wooden board melded into it's flesh, no hands, and a bloody pulp for a face (making it blind, a possible reference to his father's blind obedience to the cult). Another board is attached to it's arm, with metal hooks for attacking. It is a beast that has been tortured and weighed down, likely a reference to how Ruvik was abused and burdened.
Image
Neun and Zeun - Twins that were born conjoined at the head, they were found as infants by the cult and experimented on with a serum, causing a rapid and drastic increase in growth. Unnaturally large, they were confined due to being especially violent and dangerous. Zeun (German for 10, as in, tenth test subject) is the more cowardly of the two, has a tumorous growth on the side of his head, and wields a massive club. Neun (9) is so agressive, his eyes and ears were covered to prevent him from getting worked up (like the Garrador from RE4, besides both already being remisent of El Gigante), and a chain peirced into his breast to help restrain him. Despite not having a weapon like Zeun, Neun is even more deadly, as he wildly charges into targets with extreme aggression.
I don't entirely know why these two exist. Real experiments trapped in STEM? Memories given physical forms? The result of someone's imagination? I don't think anyone knows for sure.
ImageImageImageImage
Sentinel - Like the twins above, the Sentinel was experimented on with a serum. It was a dog, but has grown incredibly large. It appears to have grown an extra face from the side of it's head and neck, and uses it to rip apart prey. Fed with human sacrifices by the cult. The barbed wire and stakes piercing it's flesh are almost certainly a symptom of Ruvik's influence.
Again, not sure what it has to do with STEM.
ImageImageImage
Heresy - A STEM user went rampant and devoured the minds of many others. It grew into a very large monster with spider legs. It has multiple tubes plugging up the mouth, and can lay larvae from it's stomach that wrap around the ankles of prey, imobilizing them.
ImageImage
Shigyo - STEM users who drowned in the tubs all users are placed into while connected. As such, they became restricted to water, devouring anyone who goes for a swim. The have a large mouth dominating the face, with strands of long black hair. They swim with multiple deformed limbs, and are large enough to devour humans whole.
Shigyo in kanji means "dead fish".
ImageImageImage
Quell - A slimy, octopus-like monster that had created a nest in underground subway and sewer tunnels. It has the ability to turn invisible, and hides in spaces waiting to grab prey with it's tentacles. Like Heresy, it can drop off larvae, although these distract and attack rather than immobilize.
Quell was born from Ruvik's desire to be secluded, left alone in the dark and unseen by those who would judge him for his grotesque nature.
ImageImageImage

Other Enemies, part 2:
Spoiler:
Keeper - After Jimenez stole from Ruvik's safe, he became enraged and set up traps to stop future attempts. This monster was born via his feelings of paranoia and secrecy, along with his love of torture. A "man" wearing butcher's gloves and smock, the Keeper has a safe for a head and kills it's prey with traps (commonly involving barbed wire), collecting heads for the sack it carries. Inside the safe-head is a bloody mess of gore, with tentacles that can grab prey. Killing it will cause it to immediately respawn, as a new body forms around another safe (many of which lie around the areas it hunts in). It is essentially immortal as long as safes are around, and can even create two of itself at once.
A "Dark Keeper" boss is also encountered in the DLC The Executioner. It is identical, save for a dark, purplish color, a sword instead of a hammer, and like the Ruvik Doppelganger, the ability to summon Laura Reborn.
ImageImageImage
Laura Reborn - Ruvik created this from his memories of his sister, hoping to be with her again. However, it is a corrupt thing heavily altered by Ruvik's anger and desire for vengence over what happened. As such, it is a deadly creature that crawls on the ground like a spider (and on some surfaces). It has an extra set of arms sprouting from the shoulders, and all arms feature long claws. Like Laura, it has long black hair, and is completely nude except for high heels. Due to Ruvik's memories of her immolation, it is covered in horrible burns. It is almost indestructible (it can regrow it's extra arms if they are cut off), but is highly vulnerable to fire. It can teleport short distances to close in on targets, and can teleport long distances (and through walls) by "burrowing" into the ground (more of a portal made of blood), then resurface through corpses, using them as "gateways".
ImageImageImageImage
Amalgam Alpha - Multiple human conciences trapped in STEM after the death of the body, they fused together into a single mass. It appears as an unaturally shaped beast comprised of many corpses, some of which still appear to be conscious. It walks on two large arms, strong enough to toss around cars, break concrete, and smash prey into a puddle. Aside from several bodies still intact extending from it's body, it has two large heads that lack eyes, and it is draped in chains. It has a long, tentacle-like stalk it can withdraw with an eye at the end for searching areas. When flipped around, it splits open to reveal a large mouth capable of swallowing prey whole, inside of which is another eye.
ImageImageImageImageImageImage
Shade - A monster that relentlessly stalked Kidman. It appears as a tall, armless woman with high heels, with a searchlight for a head. It wears a robe greatly resembling Ruvik's, and hidden underneath, along the torso, is a large vertical mouth with many razor sharp teeth. It's "eye" light changes depending on if it is alerted, and being hit with this light stuns prey. It whispers in a distorted voice, calling out for Leslie, exclaming "body" upon devouring prey.
It has dual meaning - it represents Kidman's mission to retrieve Leslie, and Ruvik's desire to posses his body. Thus it takes on characteristics from them both, including the searchlight, which represents Kidman's flashlight.
ImageImageImage
The Administrator - The Administrator is a high ranking official in MOBIUS who gives orders to Kidman, although this is a monster in STEM in his image. It is either a result of a serum she was injected with prior to STEM insertion, designed to control STEM occupants with fear, or it is a manifestation created by Ruvik. Either way, it greatly resembles the real Administrator - a tall man in a black suit. However, it's face is typically obscured by darkness. Later, it's face and hands split open from multiple angles, revealing a red glow (like MOBIUS Haunted, but more severe). It can grow muliple enormous arms with long fingers for smashing and grabbing, which appear as if they are three dimensional shadows. It can also summon glowing red vained copies of Kidman which violently twitch and attack the real Kidman with axes. These doppelgangers walk, but with such speed that they look as if fast forwarded. The Aministrator monster itself, if close enough, can grab the back of Kidman's head, causing the MOBIUS marking on it's hand to burn through her skull.
It is initially not hostile, and serves to guide Kidman to complete her mission. After learning of Ruvik's attempt to use Leslie to escape, she rebels against her orders to retrieve Leslie, making the Administrator become violent.
ImageImageImageImageImage
Ruvik - Ruvik appeared as such before death, and after within STEM. Since he refused further skin regeneration/grafting treatments for his burns, he appears horribly scarred. His skin is very pale from lack of exposure to sunlight, and he wears a Beacon Mental Hospital robe with a hood and pants. A transparent dome on his head reveals his brain, suggesting he performed experiments on himself. He was almost all-powerful in STEM, with an immunity to damage (except fire, his weakness due to his trauma), the ability to teleport, and to mold STEM and it's inhabitants into any form he wishes. If STEM is a shared dream, he's the only lucid dreamer.
He can cause a person to explode into blood with a wave of his hand, and his influence spreads like a virus into the minds of others. His influence can become manifest itself in the form of a mist of blood that consumes anything it touches, creates/spawns monsters, and that can take a humanoid shape (the two before last below show this mist).
His influence can "infect" others, in STEM and the real world, through eye contact. This is represented by eyes that grow on the surface of walls and the sky, which can influence STEM themselves (shown last below). The lighthouse-like light on top of Beacon inside STEM also represents this, and it turns people into Haunted.
ImageImageImageImage
ImageImageImageImage
Amalgam - After absorbing Leslie's mind, Ruvik absorbed all the minds around him in STEM, turning into a monster the size of a skyscraper. Details from many different monsters can be seen growing on him, from Haunted and AlterEgo heads to Laura Reborn's claws. The beast, like Ruvik, has a glass dome on it's head, with the brain exposed underneath. At the center of this brain is Ruvik. After the dome is destroyed, the brain turns into a mouth. It is fueled by all the fear and anger in STEM.

You always post good pics to put up with the info but this time they were stellar.

I’m glad you put Kidman’s shit in here too.

You know, your never eating your time in here man.
People can always go back and reference these.

It’s really cool what you’re doing here.
