Bio Hazard Director's Cut®
(PLAYSTATION 3 & PlayStation Portable)

Late last year Bio Hazard Director's Cut was released on the PLAYSTATION Network's online store for roughly $5.99. The game was downloadable to a PlayStation Portable only, forcing a USB connection. Within the past week, the PLAYSTATION Store, PlayStation Portable firmware and file for Bio Hazard Director's Cut have all been updated. Those who have purchased the game already will have the option to download the new file and do not need to pay again.

The first noticeable difference is the icon, sporting the original PlayStation type. Secondly, the title, which now has both PSP and PS3 listed. After purchasing or selecting to re-download, the file now saves to the XMB, where it is later listed under games. From here you can either start the game on the PLAYSTATION 3 console, or select to copy it to a PlayStation Portable.

On the PLAYSTATION 3 the game runs as smooth as the original, in fact it is identical. The only software differences would be the virtual manual, which is accessible through the PlayStation button and improved colors. The rest are due to the hardware, which help the eleven year-old game benefit from virtual memory cards (unlimited space) and a wireless SIXAXIS controller.

Surprisingly, the PlayStation Portable version has received the most attention from the update. Thanks to the new 3.40 firmware, on the go Bio Hazard has never been so sweet. Enhanced colors, a new zoom screen mode, the option to eliminate load times and ability to continue your play through at home on the PLAYSTATION 3 have all been added.

The ability to continue at home where you left off on the go and vise versa is hands down the updates best feature. For those who have purchased the game already, upon booting up the new file on PlayStation Portable, a save conversion process appears. This allows the data to be read by both the PSP and PS3, respectively. Those playing for the first time are able to skip this process.

A common question is "will this work on my PLAYSTATION 3?" The answer is yes. All though the PLAYSTATION 3 is region protected for PlayStation and PlayStation 2 game discs, the downloadable files from the PLAYSTATION Store work flawlessly. The same goes for the PlayStation Portable. Lastly, for those who already own an original copy of Bio Hazard Director's Cut, your save files will work with both the PLAYSTATION 3 and PlayStation Portable.

Overall this is a very impressive hack at digital software distribution and for roughly six dollars, you can't go wrong. The only feature still desirable would be the PlayStation Portable emulation features on the PLAYSTATION 3, though we have a hunch this is in the works.
